Meet Michael Hailu, a dedicated advocate and leader committed to equity and public service from Baltimore, Maryland. A sophomore at Duke University, Michael is double majoring in Public Policy and International Comparative Studies, with a minor in African and African American Studies and a certificate in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. As Vice President of Advocacy for Duke LIFE, he works to support and uplift first-generation, low-income students. His passion for policy and immigrant rights is reflected in his internship with the Duke Refugee Advocacy Program and his leadership as president of the Ethiopian/Eritrean Student Transnational Association.

Beyond advocacy, Michael actively contributes to the Duke community as an Outreach Committee member for Duke's Black Student Alliance, a volunteer at Duke Hospital, and an undergraduate representative on the President's Council on Black Affairs (PCOBA). He also serves as an ELE (Egna le Egna) Mentor, supporting low-income Ethiopian and Eritrean high school students nationwide by providing guidance on high school navigation and the college admission process. His work focuses on bridging policy with activism, ensuring marginalized voices are heard. With aspirations of becoming an immigration lawyer, Michael is dedicated to crafting policies that promote justice and expand opportunities for all.
