TIP: If you are planning to take a time away, please resolve any matters that could result in additional fees. If in campus housing, completely move out of the dorm room and return the room key. Also return library books, parking pass, mailbox key, etc.
Checklist for Students Requesting Time Away
- Complete the Time Away Inquiry Form.
- Schedule an appointment with the Time Away Office to discuss time away options, plans and discuss the return process.
- Contact the Bursar's Office and settle any financial obligations you may have. It is important to note that if you are taking a time away during the semester to review the Tuition Withdrawal Adjustment Schedule which will determine the amount of tuition owed for the semester. The Bursar's Office can be contacted at (919) 684-3531 or bursar@duke.edu.
- Contact housing@duke.edu and reach out to your Residential Coordinator to let them know of your plans. (You can find your Resident Coordinator's contact information here). Generally, when students residing on campus request a time away during the course of the semester, they are provided 72 hours to move off of campus. The Time Away Office will help you develop a move out plan. Please remember to turn in the key to your dorm once move out has happened.
- Check the Duke Student Health Insurance Plan website for answers related to the Duke Student Health Insurance. The Duke Student Health insurance plan is purchased for the entire academic school year and the plan runs from August 1 to July 31.
- If you are an International Student, be sure to contact Duke Visa Services as soon as you decide to take a time away so they can assist with Visa status, filing and questions pertinent to your leave. Duke Visa Services can be contacted at (919) 681-8472 or visahelp@mc.duke.edu.
- Turn in your Duke Campus Mail Services mailbox key. This will prevent you from getting charged in upcoming semesters for your mailbox and replacement keys.
- Reach out to Duke Parking & Transportation to return in your parking pass or cancel your parking so you will not be charged for future semesters.
- If you have student loans, check in with the Student Loan Office to find out when your repayment window will start. It typically starts six months after your time away has been processed.
