If you are interested in taking a time away for Spring 2024, please complete the Time Away Inquiry Form. There are currently two types of time aways available during the course of the semester a Medical Leave of Absence or a Voluntary Withdrawal. Please contact the Time Away Office at timeaway@duke.edu if you have questions or want to discuss your options. 

Spring 2024 Time Aways

Spring 2024 form is now open for medical time aways. Please do not use the Spring 2024 time away form to request a Fall 2024 time aways. Fall 2024 time aways cannot be processed by the Time Away Office until Spring 2024 grades are final. The time away form for Fall 2024 will open at the close of Spring 2024. 

If you are planning to take a time away for fall semester, please plan to move out of your dorm room complete at the end of spring semester (turn in your dorm key, parking pass and mailbox key to avoid added fees). Checklist for Students Requesting Time Away

  1. Complete the Time Away Inquiry Form.
     
  2. Schedule an appointment with the Time Away Office to discuss time away options, plans and discuss the return process. 
     
  3. Contact the Bursar's Office and settle any financial obligations you may have. It is important to note that if you are taking a time away during the semester to review the Tuition Withdrawal Adjustment Schedule which will determine the amount of tuition owed for the semester.   4. Contact housing@duke.edu and reach out to your Residential Coordinator to let them know of your plans. (You can find your Resident Coordinator's contact information here). Generally, when students residing on campus request a time away during the course of the semester, they are provided 72 hours to move off of campus. The Time Away Office will help you develop a move out plan. Please remember to turn in the key to your dorm once move out has happened. 
     
  5. Check the Duke Student Health Insurance Plan website for answers related to the Duke Student Health Insurance. The Duke Student Health insurance plan is purchased for the entire academic school year and the plan runs from August 1 to July 31.  
     
  6. If you are an International Student, be sure to contact Duke Visa Services as soon as you decide to take a time away so they can assist with Visa status, filing and questions pertinent to your leave.   7. Turn in your Duke Campus Mail Services mailbox key. This will prevent you from getting charged in upcoming semesters for your mailbox and replacement keys.                                                                 
  8. Reach out to Duke Parking & Transportation to return in your parking pass or cancel your parking so you will not be charged for future semesters.                                                          
  9. If you have student loans, check in with the Student Loan Office to find out when your repayment window will start. It typically starts six months after your time away has been processed
