Candis Watts Smith
Associate Professor Political Science
Candis Watts Smith is Associate Professor of Political Science. Her research focuses on American political behavior, identity and politics, with an emphasis on race and inequality. She is the author of Black Mosaic: The Politics of Black Pan-Ethnic Diversity; Racial Stasis: The Millennial Generation and the Stagnation of Racial Attitudes in American Politics; and Stay Woke: A People's Guide to Making All Black Lives Matter.
Professor Smith is a Duke alumna, having earned her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Political Science at the university. During her time at Duke, she served as an RA, a GR, a mentor for the Baldwin Scholars, and was also a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow.
Currently, she lives in Southgate with her husband Terrell (a Duke alumnus) and their son André.
