William W. Elliott Assistant Research Professor
Assistant Research Professor of Mathematics
- A New Jersey native with a Math/Physics undergrad at Swarthmore College and Applied Math Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame. My research is in numerical algebraic geometry in applications such as engineering, biology, and computer science. I am also working in the field of multi-parameter persistence alongside Ezra Miller.
- I love going on walks to break up my day and use the environment to foster some great thinking, especially during COVID times. I have also been filling my time with knitting and binge watching Netflix shows (Criminal Minds, The Office, Schitt's Creek, The Great British Baking Show).
- I have a passion for exercise, especially swimming. I swam competitively at Swarthmore and have competed some since then (US Masters Swimming Nationals in 2017). I am working on training for a half ironman and some marathon outdoor swims. Before COVID I was also a member of a Crossfit gym; now I do my workouts from home.
- Before moving to Durham to start my postdoc at Duke, I was the head coach of an age group swim team with the Niles-Buchanan YMCA in Michigan.
- Eventually I want to own a farm with many different types of animals. Currently, I have two rabbits as pets and might look into fostering a dog or cat.
