Associate Director, Academic Advising Center
My role as Associate Director of the Academic Advising Center is to help build and strengthen relationships between students and their College Advisors. In addition to meeting with students and supporting day-to-day operations at the Center, I lead onboarding for new advisors and advance the practice of established advisors. This work gives me the chance to connect students to the larger advising ecosystem at Duke, supporting their advising partnerships from acceptance through major declaration.
I am a dedicated student advocate working to promote student success at Duke. Previously, I was an assistant professor of English at the University of Tennessee, Martin, where I received both the Hardy Graham Distinguished Professorship Award and the Outstanding New Faculty Award from the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Before that I was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northwestern University, where I earned my Ph.D.
I have also worked in public libraries, the warehouse of an eyelet wholesale distributor, and as an Investigator at Children’s Law Center in Washington, D.C., a legal nonprofit that represents children in D.C.’s abuse and neglect system. I have been a Charlote Newcombe Fellow of the Institute for Citizens and Scholars, a Phillips Library Research Fellow at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, and a Gest Fellow at Haverford College’s Quaker & Special Collections Library.
In addition to the ways students might braid their personal stories and academic interests, I am eager to talk about your favorite family recipes—seriously, please share them with me—old bicycles, and your best children’s book recommendations.
