Wilkins Aquino

Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (2018 - 2023)

Wilkins Aquino is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with broad research interests in computational mechanics. In the classroom, he consistently emphasizes gaining analytical problem-solving skills built on fundamental scientific principles. As an instructor, he balances theory and application of problem solving skills to real life scenarios. He cares about improving his courses and teaching and maintains an informal setting that allows students to feel free to interact and ask questions or provide feedback. He also conducts midterm formative evaluations and welcomes suggestions from which he can improve. Centered on the success of his students, Professor Aquino carefully assesses the academic background of the students in his classes and develops the lectures to accommodate their needs. Professor Aquino is equally involved in the modernizing of Pratt’s Civil Engineering curriculum. His vision is to project structural engineering as a broad, multidisciplinary field that draws on computational skills and data analytics. As part of that vision, he led the development of Structural Engineering Lectures of EGR 190: Engineering the Planet, a completely re-designed course. At the graduate level, he has contributed to the graduate curriculum with two new courses at Duke. The fundamental nature of his work translates into broad base applications, tremendous opportunity for collaboration, and a proven record of contributing in applied mathematics.
