Stephen Nowicki

Dean and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education

Stephen Nowicki – call him Steve – is the Dean and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and a professor in the departments of biology and psychology and neuroscience in Trinity College, and in the department of neurobiology in Duke’s medical center. He reports to the provost and serves as Duke’s principal voice on undergraduate education, responsible for leading and coordinating all aspects of undergraduate life. Steve continues to teach undergraduates – a priority and passion of his – and has published a high school biology textbook. He also continues to supervise graduate students and post-docs in his lab, which he runs with his wife Susan Peters. He has been at Duke since 1989. A native of upstate New York, Steve holds a doctorate from Cornell University, and a MS and BS from Tufts University where he majored in biology and music. Outside the office and classroom – and sometimes inside – he enjoys juggling and playing music – at home with his wife or in the student pep band that performs at Duke basketball games. Steve’s office hours are every Tuesday from 2 to 4 PM.
